Ready, Set, Donate!
To help a non-profit organization with this year's toy donation for Christmas, a set of stickers will be given out during the events previous to the charity event where toys and other donations will occur.
The stickers represent a toy category, in this case, stuffed animals, but in the darker sense of used old toys instead of new ones; this is to raise awareness of the need for the donations among the participants while showing the nostalgic but simple life of the stuffed animal through a child's perspective. From that perspective, the shapes are simple, details are not complex, and colors are basic palettes. Then there is the details from the adult's perspective, the patches, stitches, and stuffing, those contain detailed work as an adult would pay attention to those more.
But the idea didn't start with stuffed animals. You can see the thoughts put on a variety of concepts that could be applied to the main purpose of this project. There is a snowball with cities inside, there are pirate theme ideas, a car, a rocket, etc., all applicable for a kid's toy. As I sat down I observed the people around me to obtain some of these ideas, there were kids around me and I noticed something from almost every toddler, and then the kids I babysat for a bit during that week: they all have stuffed animals; I did too. It is something relatable as kids carry around old battered little stuffed toys with them wherever they go.
First Draft
The idea took some shapes and colors, but it was too basic, I was not happy with the results and from the feedback I received, there was a lot to be done with this. One suggestion was to change the position of the tails, to make them frame the main shape of the design and I implemented the ideas finding a much better result than before.
From second draft to final concept
"Find a way to make them different" I was told. I decided to change colors to unconventional colors for the animals but that also are the main colors used for children. Shapes became even simpler as I used only one for the body and incorporated other simple similar shapes for the body parts and the details.
Final Image
When you look at them, they don't look as much, the shapes are simple and the colors are just red, blue, and green, but those shapes and colors are the beginning of a child's imagination, they take form and create their world until they are capable of seeing so much more; that is the purpose of those elements. Then, as we grow up, we see the stitches that hold the toy together, we feel the stuffing that makes it fluffy, and we notice the missing parts that were lost as we dragged it around on dirt and through the rain.
Both perspectives meet, the one of the child that wishes for a toy's friendship and the adult's, capable of giving now what they once had.
